9th Grade: What you can do during 9th grade to lay the foundation for your future

  • Explore Your Interests:
    • Try new clubs, sports, or activities. This is the perfect time to discover what you enjoy and what you're good at.
    • Take different elective courses to broaden your horizons.
  • Focus on Academics:
    • Build strong study habits now. Good grades open doors to future opportunities, whether it's college, trade school, or other paths.
    • Meet with your teachers if you're struggling in any subject. Don't wait until it's too late!
  • Start Thinking About Your Future (No Pressure!):
    • Begin exploring different careers that might interest you. Online resources like Naviance and the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook can be helpful.
    • Think about what kind of lifestyle you envision for yourself.
  • Develop Essential Skills:
    • Improve your time management and organizational skills. These are crucial for academic success and life in general.
    • Work on your communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Get Involved in Your Community:
    • Volunteer your time. This not only looks good on future applications but also helps you develop valuable skills and a sense of purpose. HTHS has clubs whose main focus is service to the community. 
    • Participate in school events.
  • Build Relationships:
    • Nurture positive relationships with your peers, teachers, and counselors. These connections can provide support and guidance.
    • Start to seek out mentors.
  • Learn About Financial Literacy:
    • Begin to understand the basics of budgeting and saving.
    • If you get a job, even a small one, begin to understand how to manage the money you earn.
  • Set Goals:
    • Start setting both short-term and long-term goals. This will help you stay focused and motivated.
    • Work with your counselor to create an academic plan.
  • Utilize School Resources:
    • Get to know your school counselor. They are a valuable resource for academic, career, and personal guidance.
    • Utilize resources in Naviance, especially the Resume and the Learning and Productivity sections.
