11th Grade: An Important Year for Post-High School Planning
- Academic Excellence is Key:
- This is an important year for college applications. Maintain strong grades.
- Challenge yourself with the most rigorous courses for you (AP, dual credit).
- Address any academic weaknesses promptly.
- Standardized Testing Focus:
- Take the SAT or ACT (or both)
- Research test-optional colleges and understand their requirements.
- If considering trade schools, investigate any required placement tests.
- College/Post-Secondary Planning:
- Create a college list with a variety of "reach," "target," and "safety" schools.
- Visit college campuses or attend virtual tours.
- Research scholarship and financial aid opportunities.
- If trade school is the plan, contact those schools and find out application requirements.
- Refine Your Resume/Activity Log:
- Update your resume in Naviance with your latest accomplishments and experiences.
- Seek leadership roles in extracurricular activities.
- Document volunteer work and any jobs you've held.
- Develop Strong Relationships:
- Continue to build positive relationships with teachers and mentors.
- Request letters of recommendation from teachers and counselors who know you well (late spring).
- Financial Aid and Scholarships:
- Start researching scholarships.
- Have conversations with parents/guardians about higher education costs.
- Attend financial aid workshops or webinars.
- Begin gathering necessary financial documents for the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
- Personal Essays and Applications:
- Begin brainstorming ideas for college application essays.
- Check out the Common Application essay prompts.
- Familiarize yourself with the Common Application or other application platforms.
- Meet Regularly with Your Counselor:
- Schedule regular meetings with your school counselor to discuss your progress and post-high school plans.
- Make sure you are on track with your graduation requirements.
- Summer Planning:
- Look for meaningful summer opportunities, such as internships, volunteer work, or academic programs.
- This is a great time to gain experience and explore your interests.
