10th Grade: Stepping Up Your Preparation

  • Solidify Academic Foundations:
    • Continue to prioritize strong grades. Colleges and other post-high school programs will look closely at your sophomore year.
    • Identify academic strengths and weaknesses. Seek extra help if needed.
    • Start preparing for standardized tests (PSAT, etc.). Familiarize yourself with the format and content.
  • Explore Career and College Options:
    • Research potential career paths in more depth. Use online resources and talk to people in those fields.
    • Begin exploring colleges or trade schools that align with your interests.
    • Attend college fairs and information sessions.
  • Develop a Resume/Activity Log:
    • Update your resume in Naviance with your extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and any jobs you've held.
    • This will be helpful when applying for colleges, scholarships, and jobs.
  • Expand Extracurricular Involvement:
    • Take on leadership roles in clubs or organizations.
    • Continue to participate in activities that you enjoy and that demonstrate your skills and interests.
  • Strengthen Essential Skills:
    • Enhance your critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
    • Practice effective time management and organization.
  • Focus on Standardized Testing:
    • Take the PSAT. This can provide valuable practice and feedback.
    • Begin thinking about when you might take the SAT or ACT.
  • Build Relationships with Mentors and Counselors:
    • Maintain regular meetings with your school counselor to discuss your academic progress and post-high school plans.
    • Seek out mentors who can provide guidance and support.
  • Investigate Summer Opportunities:
    • Look for summer programs, internships, or volunteer opportunities that can enhance your skills and experience.
    • Summer is a great time to explore your interests and gain valuable experience.
  • Financial Literacy:
    • Continue to learn about budgeting, saving, and the costs of post-secondary education.
    • If possible, continue to work part time, and save a portion of your earnings.
